MK Dons finished nineteenth in last season’s League Two standings although they have been installed as strong favourites to be crowned champions of the division come May. It’s clear that they have the biggest budget in the fourth tier and that has been borne out by their recruitment over the summer.

Paul Warne is the new manager at the Buckinghamshire club, having previously enjoyed success with Rotherham United and Derby County. The 52-year-old was relieved of his duties at Pride Park last term when it appeared as though the Rams might go down, although he will feel confident of achieving success at a lower level and he did get League One promotion with the Midlands club.

The most eye-catching signing that Warne has made has been Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, someone who was playing in the Championship for Derby last term. However, Nathan Collins is also a player who might prove too good for the fourth tier. The striker arrives from Bolton, with Gethin Jones and Will Collar other notable recruits.

Nevertheless, League Two is generally wide open and MK Dons might not have it their own way. Chesterfield are next in the betting market and they can be back at 8.50 with the top betting sites. The Spireites managed to reach the play-offs last season before losing to Walsall. The Derbyshire club have captured Dilan Markanday, Ryan Stirk and Adam Lewis as the bid to push for the top three this term.

There’s then a big jump in the betting to Gillingham who proved to be underwhelming last term. Gareth Ainsworth is an experienced manager who has previously performed well with Wycombe and the Kent club will have ambitions to make an assault on the top seven this time around. Sam Vokes should certainly chip in with a few goals.

Salford City also have the potential to go well and Karl Robinson is another manager who has previously fared well at this level. Notts County will be interesting considering that they have a clearly defined way of playing, although they did lose David McGoldrick in the summer and the veteran forward was a big source of goals for the Midlands club.

Two teams that catch the eye at bigger prices are Swindon Town and Tranmere Rovers. The former are managed by Ian Holloway and enjoyed a real upturn in form when he took charge last season after looking like relegation candidates. They were a side often full of goals and we can see them going well this time around. Swindon can be backed at 17.00 with the leading football bookies.

Meanwhile, Tranmere could have a seriously solid defence next season. They have recruited Nathan Smith, Patrick Brough and Ethan Bristow to go along with the talented Lee O’Connor and Cameron Norman. Nohan Kenneh has just arrived from Hibernian and the Wirral club finished the previous campaign very strongly under manager Andy Crosby.
